Iraq snapshot Wednesday, July 3, 2019.

Wednesday, July 3, 2019.  Joe Biden continues to struggle, Turkey continues to terrorize the Iraqi people, women continue to suffer in Iraq, and much more.

War Hawk Joe Biden was supposed to be moonwalking to the Democratic Party's presidential nomination right about now.  Instead, he's barely standing.  One debate was all it took to remind America of just how ineffectual and disappointing Joe can be.  In one debate, Senator Kamala Harris raised her profile and lowered Joe's.  In one debate.  Can you imagine how poorly Joe would do in the general if the DNC gifted him the nomination?

It's been one gaffe after another and it's not even a full 3 months of Joe as a declared candidate.  Those gaffes?  They'd be present in a general election as well.  Joe doesn't learn.  That's the reality.  He can't stop sniffing women, stop invading their space.  He's called out on it and he makes jokes about it.  He can't learn.  He can't stop making gaffes.  The last weeks is what we can expect in a general election.

His campaign staff begged him to stop praising segregationists.  Or at least stop mentioning them.  We know how that ended -- with him demanding Senator Cory Booker apologize to him for being offended by Joe's remarks.  How is this going to play in a general election?

And two more things to remember.  Joe gets weepy.  The press largely looked the other way in 2008 when Joe cried on stage.  He wasn't the top of the ticket so they could look the other way.  But if Joe starts weeping as a presidential candidate in the general, what happens?  Questions about his mental stability?  Mocking?  Both?  More?

Second thing to remember, all these gaffes?  They've been made while the campaign has kept Joe away from the voters, away from reporters.  He's on a very limited public schedule because the campaign knows they have to control him to limit gaffes.  How do you run that kind of schedule in a general election?

You don't.

If you want to defeat Donald Trump, you need a candidate who is strong and can be out in public.  Joe is not that candidate.  Kamala might be the one.  Or Bernie, or Tulsi, or Elizabeth, or Kirsten, or Marianne, or Beto, or Cory, or Eric, or . . .

There are choices.  And now is the time to seriously consider them.

Joe's campaign can't put Joe forward so they're using surrogates to try to prop him.  Idiots like Ned Lamont.

  • End of conversation
  • I'm not seeing a lot of difference between Joe Lieberman and Joe Biden.  Ned apparently does.  For those who don't remember, Ned challenged Senator Joe Lieberman in the 2006 primaries.  And Ned won.  He ran a strong campaign.  Then he allowed the outsiders to invade his campaign and they ran a cautious general election campaign allowing Joe to win (Joe ran as an independent).

So Joe Lieberman voting for the Iraq War mattered to Ned once upon a time but today Joe Biden voting for the Iraq War is just candy coating around the sweet ice cream that is the center of Biden, is that it?

    They can't even whore smartly.

If Joe had shown any indication that he can learn from his mistakes, he might not be doing so poorly but he repeatedly offends people with his actions and his remarks and he cant offer a serious apology and he can't change the behavior.  He mocks the women who were brave enough to share their stories.  He demands Cory Booker, an African-American man, apologize to him because Cory is offended by Joe's praise and warm feelings for segregationists.

Joe is the old dog who will learn no new tricks.  He's making himself a joke and I'm surprised Barack Obama's crew isn't calling for Joe to drop out because, every day he campaigns, he does more damage to the Obama legacy.

A military jury acquitted a decorated Navy SEAL of premeditated murder Tuesday in the killing of a wounded Islamic State captive under his care in Iraq in 2017.
Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher was cleared of all charges except for posing for photos with the dead body of the captive in a verdict that is a major blow to military prosecutors.

The jurors ignored the testimony of a dozen of officers in Gallagher's Alpha Platoon, SEAL Team 7, who said he had shot at least two civilians from a sniper perch, among other crimes.
Some of the platoon members who testified against Gallagher were called traitors and threatened with violence in a secret Facebook group, according to the New York Times.
In court, some said they had started carrying weapons to defend themselves against possible attacks.
To sway the the jury of five Marines and two sailors, including a SEAL, Gallagher’s defense team claimed those officers were jealous of 19-year veteran Gallagher on his 8th deployment and disliked his demanding style of command.

The prosecution's remarks that Gallagher’s own text messages and photos incriminated him fell on deaf ears. They included photos of Gallagher holding the dead militant teen up by the hair and clutching a knife in his other hand.

Though cleared of the larger charges, he was convicted of one charge.  AP explains, "The same military jurors who acquitted a decorated Navy SEAL of murder in the killing of a wounded Islamic State captive under his care in Iraq in 2017 will return to court Wednesday to decide whether he should serve any jail time for the single charge he was convicted of: posing with the 17-year-old militant’s corpse."

Meanwhile Mohammed Ebraheem (IRAQI NEWS) reports, "An Iraqi woman was killed Wednesday in tribal clashes in al Qadisiyyah governorate, a security source was quoted as saying."  Women have suffered throughout the Iraq War.  One way they have suffered has been in sex trafficking though few in the media have bothered to report on that.  (OFF OUR BACKS, in one of its last issues, did report on it.  Ms. never bothered to report on it.)  Arwa Damon, Ghazi Balkiz, Brice Laine and Aqeel Najm (CNN) report on the topic today:

Nadia tried to run away, but each time her captors caught and beat her. One time they attacked her so brutally that she had internal bleeding and was taken to the hospital. She heard doctors talking about how they had to save her organs.
In the hospital room, Nadia said the head of the gang would sit at her bedside, stroking her hair and calling her his daughter. He told the medical staff that she had a mental illness and had fallen down the stairs.
When Nadia was released from hospital, she said another woman -- another victim of the gang -- was brought in to keep watch over her. Nadia begged the woman to let her go, but the woman just laughed.
The woman lifted her shirt, revealing a scar on her stomach she said she got when they stole one of her kidneys. "'This is what they did to me. I had two little children and they sold them,'" she told Nadia, before adding: "'you will be forced to stay with them, you will get used to this, all that is happening to you.'"
After months of abuse, just when Nadia thought her life would end, she was rescued. She said she wasn't sure who the men were that saved her, but they took her to a hotel run by a Yazidi and she was ultimately reconnected with her family.

As we stated, even before the OFF OUR BACKS report, a thriving business of exploiting women was taking place alongside the war and, as we noted then, the Go Go Boys of the Press were utilizing that business.  For those late to the party, US male press members were happy to stay in Baghdad and use exploited women.  And when women in the US press would find out and voice objection, they would find themselves reassigned, demoted or fired.  They were 'spoil sports.'  They were 'dangerous.'  What if the wives of these men found out!!!!!  They should find out and several did.  There's a reason so many marriages ended.  One of the most high profile break ups, in a GOOGLE search, links to this site and I never mentioned the now ex-wife here -- and when people e-mail asking about that, I instruct Martha and Shirley not to reply to those e-mails.  (I never mentioned her then-husband by name as an exploiter of women -- we did call him out on many, many other things.)
Another topic we've covered for some time:  Turkey has long been violating Iraq's sovereignty.  Dana Taib Menmy (AL-MONITOR) reports:

The Turkish air force bombed areas around the city of Sulaimaniyah in Iraqi Kurdistan on June 29, killing four and injuring four others. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry condemned the incident, demanding that Turkey stop bombing Iraqi territory.
In another incident, Turkish fighter jets on late June 27 targeted two civilian cars on Kurtak road at the foot of the Qandil Mountains in Iraqi Kurdistan, killing three persons from one family and wounding five civilians from another family, including children. Ankara’s reasoning for the strikes is to target the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the area.
    [. . .]
Bakr Baiz, the mayor of the town of Qaladze, 136 kilometers (85 miles) northwest of Sulaimaniyah, told Al-Monitor, “The Turkish fighter jets bombarded two civilian cars on Kurtak road, which connects Choman, Soran and Raniya districts; consequently three members of one family — a father a daughter and a son — were killed inside a minibus. Five other civilians from another family were injured inside the second car.”
“This is the third time in recent years that Turkish jets have massacred entire members of a family, as they are either targeting cars or civilian houses,” the mayor added.
He emphasized that the PKK fighters neither have activities in the area targeted by Turkish jets — as the area has no shared border with Turkey — nor any direct clashes with the Turkish army.
He said those killed were Abbulla Ali Mina, 53, his daughter Kurdistan Abdullah, 30, and his son Haryad Abdullah, 21.

US Navy SEAL acquitted of murder and other war crimes by military jury

US Navy SEAL acquitted of murder and other war crimes by military jury

    By Kevin Reed
    3 July 2019
Navy SEAL Special Operations Chief Edward R. Gallagher was found not guilty of murder by a military jury on Tuesday in San Diego, California. Gallagher, 40 years old and a 19-year military veteran, was accused of fatally stabbing a teenage ISIS fighter who was wounded and in US custody in Iraq on May 3, 2017.
Gallagher had been charged with a total of nine offenses including posing for a picture with the dead body of the captive, shooting two civilians from a sniper’s perch and obstruction of justice. In the end, he was cleared of all but willfully posing “for an unofficial picture with a human casualty.”
According to two other Navy SEAL witnesses, Gallagher—who goes by the nickname of “Blade” among fellow special ops soldiers—said “he’s mine” over the military radio while a medic was attending to the young prisoner. Gallagher then walked up to the medic and captive and, without uttering a word, stabbed the teenager multiple times with his hunting knife.
The murder was followed by Gallagher and his commanding officer, Lieutenant Jake Portier, as well as several other SEALS posing for photos with the dead body. Gallagher also texted a photo of himself with the dead youth to a fellow SEAL with the message, “Good story behind this, got him with my hunting knife.” In another text message, Gallagher boasted, “I’ve got a cool story for you when I get back. I’ve got my knife skills on.”
The other charges against Gallagher as an indiscriminate and reckless bloodthirsty killer stem from his role as a sniper in 2017. Accusations of criminal behavior surfaced about his firing his rifle frequently for no reason, taking “random shots” and killing innocent civilians for fun. Among those reported killed were an old man and a young girl walking with other girls and four women. Gallagher frequently boasted about his murderous spree, claiming he killed three people per day for 80 days.
The charge of obstruction of justice was brought against Gallagher for witness intimidation. He threatened to kill Navy SEALS who reported his depraved behavior. Naval prosecutors cited his text messages threatening “those traitors” who had become cooperating witnesses. Gallagher’s attempts to disrupt his prosecution became so severe that the Navy had him confined to a brig for a period of time before the trial.
Since the investigation into Gallagher’s murderous activities did not began until a year after they were committed, the Naval prosecution lacked any physical evidence and their case was based entirely on the testimony of cooperating soldiers. Gallagher’s defense team sought at every point to undermine the testimony of the witnesses as disgruntled and spiteful complaints by subordinates, not the exposure of criminal conduct.
The defense also argued that Gallagher’s text communications expressed a kind of “dark comedy” that was the natural human response to stressful wartime conditions.
Gallagher’s record of murderous behavior goes back further than 2017. He was investigated for shooting a young girl in Afghanistan in 2010 but subsequently cleared of any wrongdoing. During his eighth deployment at the battle for Mosul, Gallagher was reported numerous times by fellow Navy SEALs for actions that were not in keeping with the “rules of war.”
Meanwhile, the prosecution’s case was thrown into a tailspin on June 20 when the medic, Special Operator First Class Corey Scott, who had been granted immunity, testified that Gallagher’s stab wounds did not kill the ISIS captive. Instead, Scott said that he placed his finger over the captive’s breathing tube until he died as an act of mercy.
The prosecution also suffered from the last-minute removal of its lead military lawyer one week before the trial was to begin. Navy Judge Captain Aaron Rugh removed prosecutor Cmdr. Christopher Czaplak for secretly attempting to track the communications of the defense team and a journalist covering the trial. The judge also ordered Gallagher released from custody while awaiting trial.
The military jury of five Marines and two sailors, including one SEAL, deliberated for eight hours over two days before they returned their decisions. The one conviction on the least serious of the charges carries a sentence of four months for which Gallagher will get credit for time already served. He will be released on Tuesday.
The court martial lasted for two weeks and the lead up to it became the occasion for right-wing US political figures to advocate for Gallagher and support his family’s campaign to “Free Eddie.” Republican Representative Dan Crenshaw of Texas, a former Navy SEAL who deployed to Afghanistan in 2012, sent a letter to the Secretary of the Navy demanding that Gallagher’s detention circumstances be improved. On March 30, President Donald Trump ordered Gallagher transferred to “less restrictive confinement” following complaints from his supporters.
Illustrating the degree of support for fascistic elements like Gallagher within the American political establishment, on May 8 Republican Representative Duncan Hunter from California advocated for a presidential pardon of Gallagher if he were convicted. Following reports that the US Justice Department was looking into the case, on May 24 President Trump said he was considering a pardon for “two or three” American soldiers charged with war crimes.

President Trump went on to say, “Some of these soldiers are people that have fought hard, long. You know, we teach them how to be great fighters, and then when they fight sometime, they get really treated very unfairly.”

Tanks on the streets of Washington, DC for the Fourth of July

Tanks on the streets of Washington, DC for the Fourth of July

    2 July 2019
On the morning of July 4, the military bases on the outskirts of Washington, DC will be humming with activity.
If Donald Trump prevails in ongoing negotiations within the military over plans for Independence Day, M1A1 Abrams tank squadrons will be gearing up to roll over the Potomac toward the National Mall, while the Navy Blue Angel fighter demonstration squadron, Marine helicopter squadrons and F-35 stealth fighters prepare for afternoon fly-overs of Capitol Hill.
Before dusk, with the roar of attack jets in the background, Trump will deliver a nationally televised speech to the gathered crowd of his supporters.
This display of military force in the strip of land separating Congress from the White House is a deliberate political provocation long planned by Trump and his fascistic advisors. By replacing the traditional Independence Day fireworks with a campaign-style rally featuring what will effectively be a military parade, Trump is testing his strength.
By asserting the personal power of the executive branch over the military, Trump is following the historic path to authoritarian rule and the abolition of constitutional rights.
The legislative branch, having already ceded to Trump the power to declare a “national emergency” and appropriate billions to fund his border crackdown, now faces the prospects of tanks in the shadow of the Capitol building. This past week, the Democratic Party voted to (1) give Trump $4.9 billion to fund his immigration crackdown, (2) fund the largest ever military budget, and (3) “back-fill” money Trump apportioned from the Pentagon to build a border wall. The Democratic Party is incapable of opposing Trump’s measures because they both represent the same social interests: finance capital.

Trump announced his July 4th plans in February, tweeting that the event will be called “A Salute to America” and will include “an address by your favorite President, me!”
On Friday, less than a week before the holiday, Trump’s Interior Department made the unprecedented announcement that the event would also feature military fly-overs of the capital. Using carefully chosen words, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said it would feature “an address by our commander-in-chief.” On Monday, the press reported Trump has also requested tanks and other military vehicles.
Preparations for Trump’s July 4th event date back to January 2017, when his inaugural committee fought to include military personnel and equipment in his inaugural parade. Days before the inauguration, Trump told the Washington Post, “We’re going to show the people as we build up our military, we’re going to display our military. The military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue.”
While the military stopped Trump from carrying out this display, Trump attempted to line up soldiers behind him as he delivered his inauguration speech. In 2018, he again called for a military parade on Veterans Day, but this too was called off.
Since last year's midterm elections, Trump has continued to test his personal power over the military, proposing pardoning soldiers convicted of war crimes and demanding that the Navy move the destroyer USS John McCain—named in part after Trump’s deceased Republican rival—out of the president’s sight.
Trump is not an aberration in an otherwise healthy democracy. He is the reactionary product of a protracted process.
The last time tanks and troops rolled through Washington was in June 1991, when 8,000 soldiers marched in the so-called “National Victory Celebration” marking the end of the first US invasion of Iraq. Then, like now, the military parade was directed toward a conscious political end. The 1991 parade took place in the midst of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, with American imperialism declaring its unchallenged geopolitical hegemony over the entire world in what it labeled a “unipolar moment.”
Weeks before the military parade, President George H. W. Bush remarked, “We have finally kicked the Vietnam syndrome,” referencing the hope that a lopsided military victory would undo the widespread anti-war sentiment in the decades following the catastrophic war in Vietnam, which killed three million Vietnamese and 55,000 American soldiers.
The parade marked the beginning of an effort to systematically integrate the military into all elements of political and cultural life. After 30 years of permanent war, the US has committed sociocide throughout North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia, and created disaster after disaster. Far from resolving the long-term decline in the global position of American capitalism, the United States looks out and sees competitors in every corner, while facing growing social unrest at home. The ruling class is feverishly preparing for world war and domestic repression.
That Trump is not an aberration is demonstrated by the response of the nominal opposition. Since Trump’s inauguration, the Democratic Party has downplayed to the public the danger posed by Trump’s efforts to mobilize the military in the capital.
When Trump proposed marching the military down Pennsylvania Avenue after the midterms, the Democrats refused to draw attention to the political implications of such a maneuver, about which they were keenly aware. Instead, Democrats claimed the parade would be “too expensive.”
The corporate media dutifully went along with this dishonest narrative, opposing tanks on the streets on the ground that they would damage the city’s roads! Yesterday, the Democratic-controlled Washington DC City Council posted the banal wordplay joke on Twitter: “tanks but no tanks.”
The real reason Democrats downplay the dictatorial nature of Trump’s moves is their fear of opposition from below. Regarding Trump’s July 4th plans, the New York Times wrote that “Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat and the delegate who represents the District of Columbia in the House, said she worried that the president’s presence would so politicize a family event that it could trigger anti-Trump protests.”
The Times quoted Holmes Norton: “People are going to be angry. This is going to be the angriest July 4 ever. People are going to be so incensed that a political figure would take over the Fourth of July that you will find many who believe they will have to find a political expression of their disgust.”
In a June statement by editorial board member Michelle Cottle, the New York Times similarly worried that Trump “cares not at all about public unity” and that his actions are “stoking the nation’s divisions.” Such statements expose the Democratic Party as accomplices in Trump’s fascistic moves.
Tens of millions of people are indeed “angry” at the historic crimes committed by the Trump administration, and rightfully so. Beyond his small base of support, Trump’s dictatorial threats find little support among the broad masses of the population.
Trump’s proposal for a military parade in Washington is part of an unpopular, increasingly authoritarian method of rule. He has repeatedly threatened to disregard the results of the 2020 elections if he loses—a fact leading Democrats have dishonestly referred to as a “joke.”
Last week, Trump threatened to use “overwhelming force” to “obliterate” Iran, dragging the US into another disastrous war. His administration is seeking to extradite and jail WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange for exposing war crimes committed by the US during the war on terror.
Trump’s 4th of July event comes on the eve of the expiration of the two-week deadline Trump set in mid-June for launching military-style immigration raids in 10 cities.
With thousands of soldiers already deployed on the US-Mexico border under the auspices of a “national emergency,” the nationally coordinated raids raise the specter of military deployments and martial law in some of the most populated cities in the country, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, Atlanta and Baltimore.
Tens of thousands of immigrant children remain detained in inhumane conditions that doctors and lawyers have referred to as “concentration camps” and “torture facilities.” The bodies of dead immigrant families are washing up on the shores of the Rio Grande. Yesterday, ProPublica revealed Facebook posts showing that thousands of border guards are out-and-out fascists who joke about murdering defenseless immigrant workers risking their lives for a better life.
The Democratic Party opposes Trump’s threats of military parades not on democratic grounds, but because they are concerned Trump’s personalist presidency and his erratic conduct are obstacles to maintaining US imperialism’s geopolitical domination. The neo-McCarthyite efforts by the military-intelligence agencies and the Democrats to present Trump as a stooge of Russia and censor social media are equally anti-democratic.
The drive to dictatorship, Trotsky noted, can be compared to an overloaded electrical circuit. “Under the impact of class and international contradictions that are too highly charged, the safety switches of democracy either burn out or explode.” It is the global and internal conflicts of American and world capitalism that have fatally undermined American democracy.
