LAPD goes to Israel, falls in love with drones and mass surveillance

uruknet.info
The Jewish Journal has an incredible write-up of the Los Angeles Police Departments (LAPD) recent visit to Israel.
For nine days early this month, eight of the LAPDs highest ranking officers toured Israel on a trip organized by LAPD Deputy Chief and commander of the Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau, Michael Downing, and headed by LAPD Information Technology Bureau commander Horace Frank.
While its unclear how much the trip cost taxpayers, Frank told the Journal that the junket was financed with "grant funding that was available for us to look at emergency technologies and best practices."
Since 2001, the US government has doled out tens of billions of dollars in federal grants to local and state police departments in the name of fighting terrorism, so its likely that the grant that paid for the LAPDs Israel trip came from DHS.
Though LAPD officers have visited Israel in the past, this appears to have been the most high-level trip to date. But this was not your typical propaganda tour.
Instead of stopping at the Western Wall or Yad Vesham as many foreign dignitaries do, officers visited Israels private security firms and drone manufacturers, most of them formed by veterans of the Israeli militarys top-secret 8200 Unit, which, like the US National Security Agency, engages in mass spying and cyber warfare.
On 6 Febuary, the LAPD group attended the Big Data Intelligence Conference in Herzliya, where officers salivated at the prospect of using invasive, abuse-prone Israeli surveillance products (used to control Palestinians) on the people of Los Angeles (the brown, black and politically active lefty ones, of course).
In an opening speech to kick off the conference, Frank referred to what he feels are shared values between the US and Israel: "As civilized nations, we are all confronted with, in many cases, the same enemy: The ever-growing threat of terrorism and other major criminal elements." How very kind of him to say.
Of all the Fourth Amendment-destroying products they came across, Frank and his fellow officers were most attracted to the drones. As The Jewish Journal reports:
Surveillance drones manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Sky Sapience were also hot items on the LAPD tour. Both Frank and Perez lit up when talking about the HoverMast, a new tethered drone from Sky Sapience that was just released to the IDF late last year.
On the Sky Sapience website, the HoverMast 100 is advertised as follows (emphasis mine):
Whether your mission is locating illegals attempting to cross your border, crowd control at a political rally, or perhaps increasing security at your local electricity plant, Sky Sapiences HoverMast-100, tethered hovering machine, combines engineering genius and innovative materials to provide exceptional observation and surveillance capabilities.
I suppose such a product is fitting for a police force regularly engaged in racial profiling and suppression of First Amendment protected activity.
Speaking to the Journal, Frank couldnt stop gushing about Israeli tech giants like Nice Systems, which is currently providing mass video surveillance at the Olympics, morphing Sochi into a virtual police state.
Frank also hailed Verint, an Israeli surveillance firm that, according to investigative journalist James Bamford, was contracted by the NSA to wiretap Americans.
Reports the Journal:
Both companies already count the LAPD as a client. But, Frank said, "were looking at some of their additional solutions They have a lot of new technologies that we are very much interested in."
Nice Systems president of security, Yaron Tchwella, spoke at the conference about the companys ability to help government agencies capture and store the billions of calls, emails, messages and social media posts that their populations generate each day, then analyze it in real time to detect potential threats.
Israels "targeted killing" policy, which was once condemned by the United States (under the George W. Bush administration, ironically enough) has since been embraced by President Obama as the leading method in fighting the never-ending war on terror. So it shouldnt come as a surprise that surveillance and cyber warfare seem to be following a similar pattern.
Still, without dedicated police state enthusiasts in the United States, the importaion of abusive Israeli practices would not be possible, as the Journal explains:
The LAPD-Israel bond was in large part fused by former LAPD Chief William Bratton, who made official trips to Israel to learn about the countrys advanced counter-terrorism tactics during his chiefdom from 2002 to 2009. At a town hall meeting in Los Angeles near the end of his term, Bratton said of Israeli intelligence experts: "They are our allies. They are some of the best at what they do in the world, and that close relationship has been one of growing strength and importance."
Today Bill Bratton is the New York City police commissioner and was appointed by the lefts latest progressive savior, Mayor Bill de Blasio, who just last month attended a secret meeting with AIPAC, the leading pro-Israel lobby, where he declared his unbending loyalty to defending Israel.
Good luck New York City, youre going to need it.

Poverty rates on the rise in Iraq

He attributed this situation to the fact that the Iraqi government is channeling more focus to other issues, mainly the security situation and armament.

Iraq has been struggling with an increase in poverty rates for many years. While the Iraqi Ministry of Planning notes that the rate of poverty has recently decreased, reaching 11%, statistics released by the World Bank show that 28% of Iraqi families live below the poverty line. In the event that the country may face any kind of crisis, this rate could increase by 70%. This is currently happening because of the spike in violent acts and tense political situation.
Summary⎙ Print The security crisis in Anbar and the crisis in governance have contributed to a declining Iraqi economy.
Author Amal Sakr Posted February 11, 2014

The head of the Model Iraqi Women Organization, Athraa Hassani, provided Al-Monitor with this information, quoting World Bank officials who discussed these statistics during a meeting in Turkey with a number of members of civil society organizations seeking to find a solution to the poverty crisis in Iraq.
Hassani questions the accuracy of the poverty rates announced by the Iraqi government, affirming that these rates are continuously increasing because of a rise in daily violence and spike in unemployment rates in addition to a weakening of the Iraqi economy.
Based on the World Bank’s figures, this would mean that out of Iraq’s 34.7 million citizens, more than 9.5 million individuals are living below the poverty line.
Governor of Baghdad Ali al-Tamimi told Al-Monitor that the Iraqi government is not able to provide genuine solutions to deal with the poverty crisis in the country. Its role is limited to doling out a monthly salary for the poor, ranging between $40 and $100 depending on the number of family members. This amount is disbursed every three months; however, it does not even meet the daily needs of families. Tamimi affirmed that poverty rates are very high, and that whoever says otherwise knows nothing about the situation of Iraqi society. Tamimi, like Hassani, objects to the attempt of some governmental sources to deceive the public regarding poverty rates in Iraq and the resulting risks.
Speaking to Al-Monitor, Ali Shir, a member of the parliamentary Human Rights Committee, did not deny the fact that the poverty rate in Iraq is very high and that thousands of families feed on “garbage and live in landfills and slums.” He attributed this situation to the fact that the Iraqi government is channeling more focus to other issues, mainly the security situation and armament. This comes at the expense of social plights that are exacerbating by the day.
Hassani argues that the ideal solution involves cooperating with various organizations to put in place a new social security law for the unemployed. This law must comprise all social groups that are unable to work for one reason or another. In fact, a draft law on this subject was prepared and presented to parliament for ratification. According to the draft law, one-third of the state’s budget should be allocated to provide fixed monthly salaries for the groups specified in the law.
What is striking is that the social security law for the unemployed was not passed. According to Hassani, 13 social security draft laws proposed by various committees in parliament are currently up for discussion. The inability of politicians and officials to reach an agreement was the reason behind the failure to propose a unified social security draft law within parliament.
Al-Monitor visited many slums and poor neighborhoods such as the Safar and Husainiyah neighborhoods in Sadr City. While these neighborhoods are located within the borders of the capital to the north and northeast, they do not have water or electricity services. Roads are unpaved and houses are built with blocks that are covered with brittle tinplate fixed to the roofs with weights to keep them in place.
Al-Monitor interviewed some of the residents who said that they were living a miserable life and rely on wealthy donors to meet their basic needs. They addressed the government asking, “Until when will we tolerate the situation? We as well as our children are hungry.”
The families with whom Al-Monitor met made it clear that they are not optimistic about their situation and that of the country in general.

Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem

Act to halt Israeli destruction in the East Jerusalem neighbourhood of Beit Safafa and displacement of the local Palestinian population there. Recently sanctioned by the Israeli Supreme Court, Israeli authorities continue to build a six-lane highway through Beit Safafa that will serve expansion of Israeli settlements in the area. The highway, built on land confiscated from Beit Safafa, does not serve local Palestinians and constitutes a violation of international law. Below is a recent statement issued in this matter by the Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem:
The Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem and the Ministry of Transport are currently undertaking large-scale construction work in Beit Safafa, occupied East Jerusalem, in order to complete a highway ("Begin Highway") that will serve the expansion of Israels illegal settlements in and around the southern part of occupied East Jerusalem and expedite the annexation de facto of the Gush Etzion settlement bloc. The occupied Palestinian population of Beit Safafa does not benefit from this highway which is being imposed on them against their will. Although the highway is being built on land confiscated in the past from members of the community and passes through its center, no access road onto the highway will be available for the local Palestinian residents. Moreover, the highway is causing grave losses and damages to individuals and the community of Beit Safafa.
On Sunday, 26 January 2014, the Israeli Supreme Court sanctioned completion of the illegal section of the "Begin Highway" that cuts through the Palestinian community. Whereas, earlier on, the court had demanded substantive remedies to mitigate the damage caused for the inhabitants of Beit Safafa, it decided on Sunday that the Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem, the Ministry of Transport and the Moriah Development Company may now complete the six-lane extension without modification.
The court ruled, however, that a new detailed plan will be required to advance work on the 10-lane interchange that will connect the highway to Road 60 (Tunnel Road) leading to the Gush Etzion settlement bloc in the occupied West Bank.
Under international law, the Begin Highway currently under construction in Beit Safafa is illegal. Among others, Israel violates its obligations under the Fourth Geneva Convention by constructing a highway in the OPT which serves the permanent settlement of Israeli citizens in the OPT, and which does not benefit the occupied Palestinian population but rather the interests of its own citizens, including those in the illegal settlements. Moreover, since the section of the highway under construction in occupied Beit Safafa is part and parcel of Israels illegal settlement activity in the OPT,
Israel, with the construction of this highway, is responsible for the serious breaches of international humanitarian and human rights law already analyzed in the ICJ Advisory Opinion of 2004 on the Israeli Wall in occupied Palestinian territory, including the permanent acquisition of territory by force, violation of the Palestinian right to self-determination, forced population transfer, unlawful expropriation and destruction of Palestinian property and gross and systematic infringements against the human rights of the occupied Palestinian population.1 Based on the ICJ Advisory Opinion and the recent UN Fact Finding Mission on the Israeli settlements, therefore, Israel with its Begin Highway extension in Beit Safafa is responsible for serious breaches of peremptory norms of international law which trigger the responsibility of all States, and for war crimes which give rise to individual responsibility.2
The Civic Coalition for Palestinian Rights in Jerusalem reiterates its appeal to:
The international diplomatic community, the United Nations and governments, to terminate relations with the Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem and the Ministry of Transport, and to adopt the measures required for Israel to halt construction of this illegal settlement highway and make full reparation to the inhabitants of Beit Safafa;
Private businesses to terminate all business with the Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem and the Ministry of Transport, and Hyundai, JCB, Volvo and Caterpillar to ensure that their equipment is withdrawn from the construction work for this illegal highway;
Local councils, municipalities and civil society to boycott the Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem until it cease all illegal settlement activity in occupied Palestinian Jerusalem.
TAKE ACTION! Send email to your MEPs with demands to:
pressure Israel and the responsible executive entities, in particular the Israeli Ministry of Transport, the Jerusalem Municipality and its Moriah Jerusalem Development Company, to immediately cease construction of the new illegal settlement highway in Beit Safafa and make full reparation for losses and damages already caused to the occupied Palestinian population;
ensure that no international recognition is granted to the unlawful situation resulting from the illegal Israeli settlement enterprise of which this highway is part, and no public or private funds or business activities contribute to the construction of the illegal highway.

Canada Welcomes Mossad Assassin, Offers Him New Identity

Canada Welcomes Mossad Assassin, Offers Him New Identity

Richard Silverstein

16canadianpassport1.jpg
February 16, 2014
uruknet.info
Canadian media offers a shocking new development in the intelligence wars.  This involves a honeypot security officer working for Canadian immigration.  Her assignment was to romance an alleged Iranian spy.  Sometime during their year-long romance, one night after having a few drinks too many, she told him an amazing story: that one of the 27 Mossad agents who assassinated Mahmoud al-Mabouh escaped from Dubai to Canada:
Passport Canada secretly supplied a new identity and passport to a Mossad agent living in Canada after the Israeli spy participated in the 2010 plot to kill a leader of terrorist group Hamas in a Dubai hotel
Ive confirmed that the story is accurate through my own Israeli source.  When asked, he said it would be fruitless even to try to deny it since the story came straight from the horses mouth (Canadian intelligence).  There are many astonishing aspects of this story.  First, in light of Israel cloning passports of dual citizens of nations like France, Ireland, Australia and the UK, it didnt even have to take the trouble with Canada.  That nation perpetrated the identity fraud on Israels behalf.  Can you imagine a country creating a fake identity for an intelligence agent of a foreign country?  It beggars belief.  Second, this means that Canada doesnt tolerate the presence of Mossad agents on its soil, it welcomes them.  A country like the U.S. begrudgingly accepts that Israel is the third most intensive intelligence presence inside the U.S..  But not Canada.  Its motto is the old Monty Hall (himself Canadian) shout-out to the TV prize winner: "come on down!"
Youd think Canadians might have a few things to say about farming out their intelligence operations to a foreign country and allowing that country to become an unofficial arm of Canadian intelligence.  Not to mention, the fact that it will arouse ire against Canadians of Muslims none too keen on Israels policy of erasing Arabs it finds objectionable or inconvenient.
Apparently, this far-right Canadian government believes becoming an appurtenance of the State of Israel is the way to win elections.  Why else would a Harper minister have signed an extraordinary public security agreement with Israeli public security minister, Avi Dichter in 2008:
"The Declaration of Intent is an opportunity for Canada and Israel to strengthen their commitment to safeguarding their citizens and respective national interests from common threats," said Minister Dichter."
Public Safety Canada [the signatory of the agreement] works closely with several government agencies including the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), The Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS)and The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Officials from these agencies have no doubt been consulted regarding the terms of reference of the Israel-Canada declaration.
The terms of reference of the Canada-Israel Declaration are extremely broad. They include issues of immigration and ethnic profiling, the management of borders, intelligence and the exchange of information, emergency preparedness, correctional services, prisons, law enforcement  and counter-terrorism.
The agreement requires the two countries to "[b]uild on their shared commitment to facilitate and enhance cooperation to protect their respective countries population, assets and interests from common threats".
The issue of "counter-terrorism" is not mentioned explicitly in the Declaration of Intent. The terms of reference, however, suggest that the "war on terrorism" is an integral part of the agreement.
Whod have thought that one of the ways in which this agreement would be implemented on the ground would be in abetting an act of Israeli state terrorism?
Israeli intelligence isnt the only one benefiting from Canadas "generosity:"
Canada is today one of the worlds safest and most attractive environments for international spies, according to a former officer in the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS).
Michel Juneau-Katsuya, who last September co-authored Nest of Spies with Montreal-based journalist Fabrice de Pierrebourg, says that Canada is doing little to combat increasing espionage activity within its borders by agents of friendly and adversary nations alike, including China, Iran, Israel, the United States, and France. Juneau-Katsuya suggests that international spying within Canada is encouraged by the countrys prosperity, its multicultural urban environment, advanced telecommunications infrastructure, as well as by its political or geographical proximity to major world powers, such as Russia and the United States. The former CSIS officer also warns that foreign spies operating in Canada are becoming increasingly daring in their activities, encouraged by Canadas limited counterintelligence operations the country has not prosecuted a single foreign spy in nearly two decades.
Canada also serves as a safe harbor for many former Israeli intelligence agents.  Jonathan Dahoach Halevi, a former Shin Bet agent, was the editor of a far-right Israeli site, Shalom Toronto.  He used that cite and his perch at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs to expose journalists Anat Kamm and Uri Blau and get them arrested and convicted.  Another former Israeli agent, Ari Ben-Menashe, plots mischief with rebel groups around the world from his Montreal base.  Thanks to reader Oui, for this research.  And British Columbia is where former Mossad agent, Michael Burrows  (using the alias "Ross") , calls home.  Doron Horowitz, a proud member of Israels most brutal law enforcement unit, the Border Police, is director of national security infrastructure for the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA).  This "initiative" would scare the bejesus out of me if I were a Canadian Jew:
Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA)
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) is looking for a few good men and women.
Its organizing a recruitment drive to find Jewish volunteers to train in the arts of passive observation and prevention to increase the sense of security in Canadas major Jewish population centres.
The initiative is called the "community security network" and is touted as being similar to a neighbourhood watch program, only on a national scale.
"We will be less reliant on external [security] resources and will complement law enforcement," he [Horowitz] said. "This is the Jewish community taking an active role in [its own] security on a civilian level."
Horowitz will begin training 25 volunteers in Toronto starting next month before eventually recruiting members in Ottawa, Hamilton, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary and Vancouver, although not necessarily in that order.
The appointment of Israels first military attach to Canada was also likely part of this "thickening" of the intelligence/military relationship with Israel.  In 2012, Brig. Gen. Eden Attias, one of those named as  part of the Mavi Marmara 200 potential war criminals (he commanded the Nevatim air base used during the helicopter assault on the ship), was named to fill this position.  Here were some of his words of welcome on arriving in Canada:
"Due to the flourishing relationship between Canada and Israel, one of the recent discussions between our defence ministries involved looking for ways to get more people on the ground in each country. We have a lot of things were sharing," he said.
Indeed.  Lets add that as military attach he serves as a conduit to and from the IDFs military intelligence unit, Aman.  Attias added to his remarks:
"Israelis are starting to understand that Canada is a separate entity from the U.S.," Attias said.
But not so separate from Israel, apparently.  Attias pandered to Canadas Christian evangelicals when he blessed their pro-Israel prayer breakfast:
He [Attias], more than most, has experienced the intensity of Israels enemies hatred firsthand. At the prayer gathering he said, "On behalf ofall the people of Israel, I would like to extend a sincere appreciation to you, the Evangelist community here in Canada for supporting Israel.
This is yet another example of Canadas government jumping into bed with Israeli spies and generals with blood on their hands.
Just as you have the official basis for Canada hopping into bed with the Mossad, similarly the NSA signed an agreement with IDF Unit 8200 which dumped massive amounts of raw data, including personal information about U.S. citizens, into Israels lap.  None of it was screened beforehand to remove references to Americans.  After all, the NSA is only prevented from monitoring American citizens for its own purposes.  I suppose this means its perfectly legal to transfer such data to foreign intelligence services.
Thats also in effect what Australian intelligence did in Indonesia.  It bugged government offices there and monitored the Indonesia governments discussions with a U.S. law firm that was aiding it in international trade negotiations with the U.S. government.  In effect, Aussie intelligence was telling us what position the Indonesians would take in the talks, not to mention invading the attorney-client privilege of the U.S. firm.
In the old days it used to be that spies jealously guarded their secrets from foreign spies.  Nowadays, the only people spies guard their secrets from are the victims on whom theyre spying.  They share their trove of information with just about any allied intelligence agency that has a use for it.
This story comes on the heels of Stephen Harpers recent pilgrimage to Israel in which he fawned over Bibi Netanyahu and even serenaded him with a musical concert.  They used to call Tony Blair, Bushs poodle in the British press.  Now, Harper has become Bibis poodle.

US Press Freedom Threatened

US Press Freedom Threatened

by Stephen Lendman

February 16, 2014

First Amendment rights matter most. Without them all other freedoms are at risk. Post-9/11 policies threaten them.
Bush waged war against them. Obama escalated it. He promised transparency, accountability and reform. He called whistleblowing "acts of courage and patriotism." He said one thing. He did another.
Press freedoms are endangered. An October Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) report discussed Obama and the press.
Journalists say he's waging war on dissent. He exceeds the worst of George Bush. He's heading America on a fast track to tyranny.
He wants information people have a right to know suppressed. He evades press scrutiny. He aggressively targets leakers.
Anyone suspected of disclosing information he wants concealed is vulnerable. Press freedom is gravely threatened.
On February 12, a CPJ press release headlined "Attacks on the Press: CPJ to launch annual global assessment of press freedom."
It named three key threats. They include digital surveillance, murdering journalists, and pressuring them to suppress what governments don't want revealed.
Authoritarian states used to be primary battlegrounds, said CPJ. No longer. New technologies potentially threaten press freedom everywhere.
"Governments' capacity to store transactional data and the content of communications undermines journalists' ability to protect sources," said CPJ.
Out-of-control NSA spying harms everyone. It's driving a stake in the heart of press freedom. It's compromised gravely in America.
CPJ first published "Attacks on the Press" in 1986. This year's edition features a chapter titled "The NSA Puts Journalists Under a Cloud of Suspicion."
Mass agency surveillance collects enormous amounts of data. It's retained. Doing so "poses a unique threat to journalism in the digital age," said CPJ.
Virtually everything digital can be monitored. NSA "recreate(s) a reporter's research." It retraces sources' movements.
It follows current and past communications. It uncovers confidential sources. It does so with technological ease.
It renders confidentiality promises meaningless. If current interactions escape scrutiny, they're reconstructed later on.
Doing so compromises free data flows. Sources become reluctant to cooperate. Disclosing information Washington wants concealed entails risks.
Suppressing what people need to know compromises press freedom. Advanced data storage technology creates another potential risk.
"It provides a deep breeding ground for artificial intelligence systems, which may in the future lead to more efficient, even predictive, spying machines," said CPJ.
Washington and other governments will spot what they most wish to know. Perhaps they'll do it in advance.
Imagine the potential ability to discover things before they happen. Unless checked, out-of-control spying may destroy press freedom entirely. Maybe all freedoms.
Perhaps what's ongoing now is prelude to much worse. CPJ interviewed William Binney. America is "a police state," he said. Mass spying is "a totalitarian process."
NSA monitors all journalists. It maintains "a record of all of them so (it) can investigate, so (it) can look at who they'll calling - who are the potential sources that they're involved  in, what probable stories they're working on, and things like that."
National security expert James Bamford told CPJ he believes certain journalists get extra scrutiny.
"If you're writing about national security or the NSA itself, they consider you...a national security danger, and so they feel justified in doing whatever they're doing," he said.
ACLU attorney Alex Abdo litigated against NSA. At issue are compromised constitutionally guaranteed free speech and privacy rights.
"(A)ll reporters should be worried," he believes. Different things affect them.
"Reporters who work for the largest media organizations should be worried probably primarily because their sources will dry up as (they) recognize that there is no way to cover their trail."
Independent journalists may be targeted. They're vulnerable on their own. They lack "institutional protections" MSM reporters get.
When questioned, NSA consistently lies. Spokeswoman Vanee Vines told CPJ:
"NSA is focused on discovering and developing intelligence about valid foreign intelligence targets in order to protect the nation and its interests from threats such as terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction."
It bears repeating what other articles explained. America's only threats are ones it invents.
Post-9/11, NSA spying uncovered zero terrorist threats. None! Claims otherwise are false.
Obama lied saying "US intelligence agencies (are) anchored in a system of checks and balances - with oversight from elected leaders, and protections for ordinary citizens."
He lied claiming mass surveillance "prevented multiple attacks and saved lives - not just here in the United States, but around the globe."
He lied saying federal courts and congressional oversight curbed "some of the worst excesses that emerged after 9/11..."
He lied saying he ordered "increased oversight and auditing, including new structures aimed at compliance."
He lied claiming nothing he's seen "indicate(s) that our intelligence community has sought to violate the law or is cavalier about the civil liberties of (American) citizens."
He lied saying "the men and women of the intelligence community, including the NSA, consistently follow protocols designed to protect the privacy of ordinary people."
He lied claiming "(t)hey're not abusing authority in order to listen to your private phone calls or read your emails."
He lied saying "(w)hen mistakes are made...they correct" them.
He lied saying "our intelligence community follows the law."
He lied claiming terrorist threats "are not going away any time soon. They are going to continue to be a major problem."
Director of National Intelligence (DNI) head James Clapper is an acknowledged perjurer. He belatedly admitted lying to Congress.
Senator Ron Wyden asked him: "Does the NSA collect any type of data at all on millions or hundreds of millions of Americans?"
"No sir," said Clapper, "not wittingly." Facing perjury charges he wrote Senate Select Committee on Intelligence chairwoman Diane Feinstein. He apologized for "clearly erroneous" remarks under oath.
Russell Tice is a former Office of Naval Intelligence/Defense Intelligence Agency/NSA analyst. His career spanned 20 years.
Earlier he accused NSA of unconstitutionally wiretapping US citizens, saying:
"Everyone at NSA knew what they were doing was illegal, because its drilled into our heads over and over that it's against NSA policy, that you do not do that. The choice is to speak out and get fired."
Tice personally witnessed agency spying on news organizations and journalists.
Former army intelligence Sgt. Adrienne Kinne said she monitored phone conversations between journalists in Iraq and their spouses and editors.
Snowden revelations explained much more. Clapper lied to Congress claiming he caused "profound damage."
He exposed lawless spying. He connected important dots for millions. He told people what they need to know.
He's outrageously charged under the 1917 Espionage Act. It's a WW I relic. It has no relevancy today.
Obama uses against whistleblowers. He targeted more than all his predecessors combined.
Snowden charges include:
  • "Theft of government property;
  • Unauthorized Communication of National Defense Information (and)
  • Willful Communication of Classified Intelligence Information to an Unauthorized Person."
Bradley (Chelsea) Manning was prosecuted for revealing serious war crimes. He got 35 years in prison for acting responsibly.
Journalists revealing what Washington wants suppressed are vulnerable. Last October, NSA chief General Keith Alexander expressed no patience with journalists investigating agency activities.
"I think it's wrong that newspaper reporters have all these documents, 50,000 or whatever they have, and are selling them and giving them out as these - you know it just doesn't make sense," he said.
"We ought to come up with a way of stopping it. I don't know how to do that..."
"(T)hat's more (for) the courts and the policy makers, but from my perspective it's wrong, and to allow this to go on is wrong."
Most journalists may not end up in NSA's crosshairs, said CPJ. All journalists need to know they're monitored. They're vulnerable if writing about affairs of state and related issues.
It's impossible to know everything NSA collects, said CPJ. It's enough to give everyone pause.
Constitutional violations threaten fundamental freedoms. They're eroding en route to perhaps disappearing altogether.
Computer security expert Bruce Schneier compares meta-data collection and analysis to hiring a private detective to snoop on someone's activities and associations.
"The result would be details of what he did: where he went, who he talked to, what he looked at, what he purchased - how he spent his day," said Schneier.
Bamford calls meta-data surveillance especially dangerous to journalists, saying:
"Its always dangerous when the government has access to journalists' communication because what journalists guarantee sources is confidentiality, and if there's no such thing as confidentiality from the government, it would inhibit the future cooperation from sources."
This gravely compromises investigative journalism. If government "see(s) all the numbers you're calling, they're able to tell pretty much what kind of story you're working on, even without getting (its) content..."
"They're able to tell what the nature of the story is, (and names of) sources you're dealing with."
Binney said NSA didn't build its sophisticated Utah facility for transactional data alone. It's for collecting and storing "content of communications, not just metadata," he stressed.
"They are building more and more storage because they're collecting" vast amounts of data.
They "take everything" off communication lines "and store it." Information is "indexed to the graph of lives and social networks."
NSA can access content to determine a timeline of people's relationships. Binney believes the agency has content and meta-data for the past dozen years.
Unless checked, imagine how much more it'll have ahead. "(T)he more data you get, the more capacity you have to see into somebody,'s life," said Binney.
Technological advances let NSA spy in unprecedented ways. Journalists have to rethink how they communicate with sources.
"The NSA is gathering power and (it's) gathering more capabilities and more eavesdropping, more invasive technologies," said Bamford.
"At the same time, (it's) deceiving the very weak organizations that are supposed to be the oversight mechanisms - the Congress and the FISA Court."
"I think it's a very worrying situation, not just for journalists, but for anybody."
Over 100 years ago, former Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis called sunlight "the best of disinfectants." He couldn't imagine how badly it's needed now.
A Final Comment
The Electronic Freedom Foundation (EFF) called February 11 "The Day We Fight Back."
It joined "thousands of websites in protesting (against) mass (NSA) surveillance" It used its web site "as a platform for users to speak out against spying abuses..."
It helped them contact congressional members easily. Oppose the FISA Improvement Act, it said. Support the USA Freedom Act.
Protests were held in cities worldwide. People fought back for freedoms too important to lose.
On February 12, EFF asked "How Big Was the Day We (Fought) Back?" It showed a visual image of Michigan Stadium filled to capacity. It holds 109,901 people.
Imagine two MSs filled to capacity, said EFF. Imagine everyone in them "doing the same thing at the same time - contacting Congress and demanding an end to mass surveillance."
You'd be thousands short of nearly 250,000 Americans doing it. They called. They emailed. They demanded Congress support their rights.
Another 200,000 + participated in organized actions worldwide.
At peak times, congressional members were bombarded with over 7,000 calls an hour. EFF stressed what it said before.
February 11 wasn't a one-time action. EFF began challenging lawless NSA spying almost a decade ago. "(W)e're not going to stop now," it said.
Hundreds of thousands of people speaking out is "amazing," it added. "We're proud to have taken part" in what's so important.
EFF expressed gratitude to "many, many" other participants. Freedom isn't something handed out without struggle.
Getting rights requires fighting for them. The same holds for keeping them. Key is not letting energy wane.
Sustaining it makes winning struggles possible. What's more precious than fundamental freedoms for all.

Bahrain: Bomb kills policeman as protesters mark anniversary

Bahrain: Bomb kills policeman as protesters mark anniversary

Allvoices

A Bahraini policeman was seriously injured and later died of his wounds in the Shiite village of Daih on Saturday, according to the interior ministry.

The "terrorist explosion" struck in the village of Daih outside the capital Manama late on Friday and wounded "two on-duty policemen assigned to secure the road," including the one who later died, the ministry said on Twitter, official news agency BNA reported.

The ministry added that the search operation and investigation launched after the attack was continuing.

Earlier, the ministry reported that a Bahraini police bus was struck in a bomb attack in Daih on Friday, but caused no casualties.

According to The Associated Press, a member from the police near the scene of the blast told reporters that three police officers were injured in the explosion. He insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Meanwhile, anti-riot police used buckshot, sound grenades and tear gas to disperse demonstrators who were attempting to reach the iconic Pearl Square of Manama on Saturday.

According to media reports, those leading the protest carried a large banner reading, "The march of loyalty to martyrs," while a poster read in English, "No dialog before the downfall of the Al Khalifa regime."

Bahrain's opposition groups, led by the main Shiite opposition party Al Wefaq and supported by Iran, has called for a one-week strike and nationwide protests starting on Thursday to mark the third anniversary of the popular uprising against the Al Khalifa regime.

Witnesses reported that "clouds of tear gas" covered the streets of several Shiite-majority villages around the capital Manama as authorities attempted to contain the demonstrations. Protesters allegedly also set up many makeshift roadblocks of rotten trees and burning tires as a way to defy the police crackdown.

The government reported that the police confronted all "vandals" and "cleared all of the blocked roads."

On Friday, Shiite opposition cleric Sheikh Issa Qassim said during the Friday prayers that "a rally is waiting for you tomorrow [Saturday]. It is supposed to be expressive, effective and gigantic. Fully peaceful, highly civilized."

"The way to achieve the legitimate demands must be constant nonviolent with a significant level of effectiveness."

On Thursday, 29 people from several Bahraini towns and villages, including Jad Hafs, Diraz , al-Nabih and Bilad al Qadim, were detained for plotting attacks on Bahraini police in several villages, Bahrain's interior ministry said.

The ministry also said it would take action against calls to hold rallies and marches. Meanwhile, riot police and other security forces have deployed around the square and other parts of the kingdom to prevent the opposition from staging mass rallies.

Bahrain's Foreign Ministry condemned "irresponsible statements" by a spokeswoman for Iran's Foreign Ministry, which it said was interfering in Bahrain's internal affairs.

In comments to the state news agency, it said it had protested to Iran's charge d'affaires to the kingdom.

Iran also summoned Bahrain's charge d'affaires to protest "unfounded anti-Iran allegations" on Thursday, Iran's Press TV reported.

Bahrain, a staunch ally of the West and the home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been rocked by political and social unrest since protests, led by the Shiite majority, broke out in February 2011.

According to the International Federation of Human Rights, the three years of violent demonstrations in Bahrain and acts of sabotage and repression have left 89 people dead, including police officials, and injured hundreds others.

Housing demolitions on the rise as the ICRC stops providing tents in the Jordan Valley

Housing demolitions on the rise as the ICRC stops providing tents in the Jordan Valley

Israeli forces demolished yet another Palestinian home in Al-Tur, East Jerusalem, on 10 February after the owner failed to get building permission. The owner, Ali Hassan Al-Juber, was at work at a local school, when Israeli authorities demolished his home, a single caravan, between 9.15 and 9.30 in the morning. Al-Juber received the demolition order in 2009, but had since been attempting to retroactively legalize the structure.

"Weve tried to open a court case in order to approve our home Ive paid over 10,000 shekels but its useless it will never be approved." Al-Juber has 8 children and is now staying at his neighbours home next door.

"What can we do, this is the situation, not just for us, but for many Palestinians," said Al-Juber in an interview with the Palestine Monitor on Monday.

On the same day Mohammed Hasan Sawahra, a resident of the Silwan area of Jerusalem, was forced out of his house by "dozens of soldiers and police officers," before his 18 year old home was demolished. Israeli authorities demolished the home because he did not have the required Israeli approved construction permit. Sawahra, like Al-Juber, has filed appeals that are still pending, and has been paying fines to the City Council.

In a third case on Monday, Israeli soldiers demolished the house of Mohammaed Hasan Jaafra in the Jabal al-Mokabber area of Jerusalem despite the fact that he had paid a 30000 NIS fine, for building his house without permission from Israeli authorities.

This brings the number of house demolitions in the occupied West Bank to 106 since the start of this year, displacing 179 people, according the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions.

25 aid organisations condemn the actions of Israel

In 2013, the number of Palestinian homes demolished by the Israeli authorities reached a five-year high, up 43 percent from 2012.

OCHA reported that the total number of buildings destroyed in 2013 was 390, displacing 590 people, significantly higher than the 279 buildings that were demolished a year earlier. (Here you will find a map of house demolitions Jordan valley).

In response, 25 aid agencies, including Christian Aid, Oxfam International and War Child called for "an immediate halt to the demolitions of Palestinian homes, and for Israel to facilitate immediate, full and unimpeded humanitarian access."

Over sixty percent of the West Bank has been designated Area C and falls under full Israeli military and civil control. In Area C, Israeli authorities rarely allow Palestinians to construct houses; OCHA reported that 70% of Palestinian building applications are rejected. Out of necessity, Palestinians are forced to build without permits and subsequently face large fines and frequent demolitions.

Conversely, settlers are encouraged to move to the Jordan Valley, by the Israeli government , which provides extensive benefits to settlers, including cheap housing. Approximately 11,679 settlers live among 58,000 Palestinians in the Jordan Valley, where settlers control 86% of the land in the area, according to Oxfam International.

Under international law, settlers are living in the Jordan Valley illegally. As Israelis Prime Minister vows to allow settlers to stay in the Jordan Valley, his army is forcibly removing Palestinians who are living there legally.

Red Cross stops providing tents in the Jordan Valley

The Red Cross has made a decision to stop providing tents to families in the Jordan Valley whose homes have been demolished by Israeli authorities. The move comes in the form of a protest against the Israeli military that has been repeatedly confiscating the tents and stopping them from reaching families who have been evicted from their homes.

"The ICRC had no alternative but to take this decision," said Jon Larsen, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in an interview the Palestine Monitor. Israeli authorities routinely prevented the delivery of the tents since the beginning of last year.

Larsen noted that this was a "difficult decision," and that it will continue to provide other forms of aid. Furthermore, as soon as Israel formally states that it will allow tents to be delivered, the ICRC will continue to pass out tents.

In January alone, the Israeli authorities demolished 27 homes in the Jordan Valley, leaving 147 people homeless, according to statistics from B'Tselem.

"Israel has an obligation under international humanitarian law to provide humanitarian assistance to the people in need in the occupied territory," explained Larsen. Not only does Israel fail to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need, after it has demolished the houses of some of the most vulnerable communities, it also prohibits international NGOs from adequately providing assistance.

Increasing number of house demolitions

There is serious concern among the international community about the increasing number of house demolitions, especially in the Jordan Valley.
"I am deeply concerned about the ongoing displacement and dispossession of Palestinians," said UN coordinator James Rawley released in a statement on 31 January 2014.

Many of the families whose homes are demolished are Bedouins or herder communities that rely on the water resources, climate and land to graze their livestock. Communities are often displaced more than once, and often the Israeli military will destroy entire communities in just one night. Save the Children found that 31% of households in the Jordan Valley have been displaced at least once.

The ICRC highlights that "the destruction and confiscation of private property in occupied territory is prohibited under international humanitarian law."

In 2013, 122 structures that were provided by aid organisations were demolished by Israeli authorities, and 65 items of aid, including tents were confiscated. The end of the distribution of tents in the Jordan Valley will have a huge impact on families whose homes have been destroyed and have nowhere else to go.

Many will be forced to move away from the Jordan Valley to bigger towns in the West Bank. This is a tactic Israel is using to ensure that settlers stay in the area, and Palestinians begin to move away from the territory.

At the end of 2013, Israeli ministers voted to annex the Jordan Valley. The bill, sponsored by Minister of the Knesset Miri Regev, a member of the Lukid party, was supported by eight ministers, all from the Lukid, Yisrael Beytenu or Bayit Yehudi parties. The bill called for Israeli sovereignty to be extended to the Jordan Valley, with Israel annexing a significant part of the West Bank, violating international law. The Jordan Valley, is a strategic border for Israel; former Israeli ambassador to the UN called the area "the frontline of Israels defence."

For Palestinian families living in the Jordan Valley, life isnt easy. With the withdrawal of some vital supplies provided by the ICRC, life will be made even more difficult. Were Israel to annex the Jordan Valley, it is almost certain that Palestinians would be completely forced out of the area.

Last British resident in Guantnamo marks 12th year in captivity

Last British resident in Guantnamo marks 12th year in captivity

Reprieve

Shaker Aamer, the last British resident in the US detention camp at Guantnamo Bay, has appealed to the British Government to apply new pressure on the US to secure his freedom, exactly 12 years after the start of his imprisonment.
In a recent letter to his lawyer, Reprieves Director Clive Stafford Smith, Mr Aamer said:
"The world has to tell the US Government that they have lost their direction. The people best placed to do this are the British Government."
Mr Aamer also described the difficulties of daily life at the hands of the prison authorities:
"Yesterday, my fellow detainee Emad Hassan did not take his legal call, for the same reason every time he misses a phone call or a meeting. They intimidate him by telling him before he goes, 'well do a full body search the 'scrotum groping search as they call it. So Emad goes with them to the Camp 5 exit where they plan to do the search, and when he sees them ready to carry out a full body search, he tells them that he refuses the humiliation, and demands to go back to his cell."
"The authorities dont want someone like Emad to let the world know what has happened to him."
The anniversary comes just days after a court in Washington D.C ruled that hunger-striking detainees, including Mr Aamer, can challenge their force-feeding in a federal court. A case brought by legal charity Reprieve and associated counsel Jon B. Eisenberg saw the court ruling two-to-one that the Federal District Court has jurisdiction to decide whether the techniques used to force-feed detainees in Guantnamo Bay violate the law.
Mr Aamer is currently on hunger strike, and in increasingly poor health. In his latest letter to his lawyers, he reports that 35 detainees are now hunger striking, a marked increase on the figures most recently reported by inmates.
Aamers 47th birthday passed last December, and today marks the 12th birthday of his son Faris, who was born on the day he was imprisoned.

Worsening Afghan humanitarian situation but lower appeal

Worsening Afghan humanitarian situation but lower appeal

IRIN

41afghan_civilians.jpg
February 15, 2014
uruknet.info
- The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today launched this years Common Humanitarian Action Plan (CHAP) in Kabul, Afghanistan, identifying a worsening humanitarian situation but reducing the appeal to $406 million from last years $474 million.

"At the start of 2014, Afghanistan faces an uncertain future, where the political and security transitions are bound to bring about major changes to the country and its people," said the Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, Mark Bowden, speaking at the launch event.

Presidential elections in April to select a successor to Hamid Karzai and the pull-out of most or all international forces by the end of December make this year a turning point for the country.

The CHAP funding appeal says the withdrawal represents an opportunity for the humanitarian community "to distinguish humanitarian action more clearly from the activities and objectives of political, military and other actors."

Most dangerous place

The use of aid by the NATO-led international forces as a "force multiplier" has been criticized by many in the humanitarian community for endangering the humanitarian principle of neutrality, and also risking the lives of aid workers, for whom Afghanistan is the worlds most dangerous country. In 2013, 80 aid workers in Afghanistan were victims of attacks, kidnappings or killings, according to the Aid Worker Security Database. It is the largest number of incidents any country has seen in a single year since the database began keeping records.

"The humanitarian situation is worsening," reads this years Strategic Response Plan (SRP) for Afghanistan, which forms part of the CHAP appeal. The SRP says the number of people in need of access to health services has increased from 3.3 to 5.4 million.

Focus on acute needs

This years slightly lower appeal focuses on acute humanitarian needs brought about by "the recent intensification and spread of conflict and the acute emergencies resulting from this", according to the SRP.

The five provinces identified as having the greatest humanitarian need are Helmand, Kunar, Badghis, Nangarhar and Ghor.

"Were going to be very focused, based on what we know about what our actual capacity is and make sure we do that in a quality way," the head of OCHA Afghanistan, Aidan OLeary, told IRIN. "For us, less is more in the sense of being very prioritized, being very focused, and making sure that we deliver what we say were going to deliver, and not just being big for the sake of being big."

Last years humanitarian appeal was the UNs most well-funded, as a percentage, with almost 81 percent ($384 million) raised.

Despite the large amounts of aid pledged to Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion - around $90 billion - humanitarian financing makes up less than 7 percent of non-security international assistance.

Bowden warned that Afghanistan risked becoming a "forgotten emergency" as international attention shifted to other crises in Syria and the Central African Republic.

What is The Aim of Al-Maliki Government?

Why does Al-Maliki follow the steps of the occupation and all its brutal policy ,criminality and destruction?

An occupation has no identity, or nationality, it only has a desire to prevail, as demonstrated by the Iraqi government nowadays. Every attitude, policy, media and diplomatic justifications, even the tiniest details, are only a transcript of the behaviors of the occupation led by the United States against Iraq during the last ten years, and what the Zionist occupation has been doing in Palestine about a century ago. Thus, the Iraqi government is an occupation government, in word and deed.
A fast comparison between the news that is floating on the surface- because this is just the tip of the iceberg- confirms that the two occupations are just the same. The American occupation was built on lies to cover the real motivations to terminate the national Iraqi State; it practiced terrorism under the pretext of fighting it, while terrorism didn’t even exist in Iraq in the first place. This was ended with assigning a puppet government under their authority, implementing their project, no wonder it’s a transcript of them. If there was some justice in the current world order since the WW2, those who planned and implemented the occupation would have been behind bars now, so is the international attitude towards the policy of this government. The Security Council ,who provided the legal cover for the occupation after its start , is now supporting a policy of a fascist retarded government, who is slaughtering its people like sheep in a slaughterhouse-as Struan Stevenson the Chairman of the Iraq Committee in the European Parliament described it. Stevenson described what the government of Al-Maliki is practicing, genocide, and mass executions, not only metaphorically speaking, but literally. The Iraqi government has accused some of the areas in Iraq of terrorism, and bombed the unarmed citizens with artillery, aviation, missiles and incendiary internationally banned weapons (exactly like what the occupation did).It also takes the prisoners immediately to the gibbet,no investigation, trial or any kind of legal procedure, rather; it terminates the wounded, and representing the corpses of the victims ,not to mention the hundred thousands of the families who were displaced.
Worse than that- if there’s worse- the government goes on its policy in imposing the civil war by force on its people, as a first step to divide Iraq, turning it into small cantons ,ruled by anyone, for the behalf of the regional expansive imperialism-imperialism is not only for the superpowers as the traditional left people fancy. What is the meaning of Al-Maliki decision to turn certain districts into independent governorates? Not only that; people in some areas in Baghdad demanded to get their independence! Isn’t that division? Have all the misfortunes ended; those misfortunes the Iraqis suffer due to the occupation and its governments; the insecurity, unemployment, corruption that burst the eyes before the nose, the absolute injustice, the absence of the authority of the state ,and any developmental project ,and the cultural degradation ?Al-Maliki forgot all that, and started to think of creating new governorates. If he considered paving one street in one of those cities, but….. NO! Speaking of which, I remembered a joke; familiar by the people in Karbala ( whom Al-Maliki thinks he gets their support ).The joke talks about a street, which doesn’t exceed few hundred meters, the government has been spending millions of dollars on it during the last six years , but it hasn’t been paved yet.
But ,the question that arises itself in – perhaps- some naivety; if the aim of occupying Iraq was to terminate the Iraqi State, since it’s an obstacle in the way of the Zionist-American strategic project, why does Al-Maliki follow the steps of the occupation and all its brutal policy, criminality and destruction? Maybe the readers remember how the American occupation claimed that it drawn Al-Qaeda, assembled it and hit it through the occupation of the country.
The Iraqi government did the same: few days ago, Hasan Al-Shammari, the Minister of Justice confessed that they released some of the armed group leaders, in a spectacle operation of smuggling prisoners from the two prisons in Abu-Ghraib and Al-Taji. After a short period, there was news about the entrance of 5000 armed men ( from Syria, not from Iraq) – here we are talking about the escaped Syrian civilians who fled their houses due to the criminal bombing of Bashar Al-Asad regime. Now the Iraqi government is killing, destroying and committing crimes, in the pretext of “ fighting terrorism”.
Isn’t the picture clear in the two similar scenarios? To open the gate to the terrorists, then killing the civilians, in the name of fighting terrorism. It is worth to mention that I’ve searched seriously for something that might be the real reason that pushes the Iraqi government to practice such a criminal behavior. I found nothing; the government just goes on in completing the occupation plans in making Iraq a fully paralyzed country, so the Iraqis think of nothing but to earn their living in the least manner, walking beside the walls, and saying ( God please protect us),thus no one of them could ever dare to demand the simplest rights.
The question is always the same; why?
Of course the answer isn’t in the religious, or the ethnic, or the sectarian or the class ideologies, which are only ideological frames to move the people towards a certain direction without another through practicing an authority .In other words; the sectarianism-in this case- is not the end, but the means or the cover. That’s why no sane person can believe the stories of injustice narrated by the occupation ,particularly because the occupation governments in Iraq practiced brutality on everyone, whether those victims support the occupation, or stay silent against the oppression of the government, regardless of the victims’ ideological orientation. It went deeper in the policy of darkness, ignorance, obscurantism ,returning Iraq centuries backwards.
The government went even deeper in terrorism; the state terrorism (Allawi started that in Fallujah, and increased by Al-Jafari and Soulag), not to forget Al-Maliki in terms of judicial corruption, buying off, trading the people’s lives, and mass executions. There’s the terrorism of the militias which belong to the parties of the state, which turn the armed forces ( the army, the police, the special forces in all naming) into militias wearing official government uniforms. They wander in the streets ,day and night, with their slogans, flags, and loudspeakers, insulting and provoking people. We can’t forget mentioning the assassination gangs, that are armed and trained in Iran or by Iranian forces in Iraq. Also, the “ mysterious” explosions campaigns, claiming that the “Takfiris” and the “Saddamis”  implemented them. The government wasn’t able to know their identities and sue them, and this serves as an enough reason-if the government respects itself- to move away, but this is the pathological desire to prevail, it’s the culture of revenge, hatred inherent in the souls, which make them slaves for the occupation, who terribly exploited them in its crimes against the people, serving its strategic interests in controlling the world, while others exploit that in their expansive projects of power and dominance.
Dr.Eman Ahmed Khammas - Iraqi writer
