AT LEAST 1,300 IRAQIS KILLED IN JANUARY, MOSTLY CIVILIANS :UN

The United Nations says fighting and other violence in Iraq has killed at least 1,375 people in January.

The UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) said on February 1 that the dead included 790 civilians and 585 members of the government army troops.

The statement added that at least 1,469 civilians and 771 security forces members were wounded last month.

The worst affected city was the capital, Baghdad, with 256 civilians killed.

According to UNAMI figures, 2014 was the deadliest in Iraq since 2006-07, with a total of 12,282 people killed.

However, the UN says its numbers "have to be considered as the absolute minimum."
