Summary of News on Tuesday, 23 Oct

One of the governmental police committed suicide, jumping off of a bridge in the south of Samawah. This is the second incident of its kind in nine days, as another of the governmental police shot himself in Al-Qadisiyah province nine days ago. A car collided with a big truck in An-Nasiriyah killing twelve workers. A warning was issued that the outbreak of cholera might be spreading to Wasit province. The province of Diyala demands Iran to cease blockage of the Lalonde river, a river vital to the province.

Eight car bombs exploded in an overcrowded area in the northwest of Baghdad, killing at least fifteen civilians (maybe more, because of the explosion's intensity) and injuring sixteen more. Also in the northwest of Baghdad, close to the same district, a mortar shell fell from an unknown source, killing seven civilians and injuring two more. Another mortar shell fell in the west of Baghdad, injuring two civilians. A third mortar shell fell in the northeast of Baghdad around the same time as the first, but
caused no casualties.

An explosive device went off beneath a patrol of the Peshmerga in the northwest of Kirkuk, injuring two of them, one being an officer (major).

A government army regiment continued searches and raids in the north of Baghdad, from since a week ago, arbitrarily detaining civilians without charges and taking them back to their own headquarters. After having locked down the area, they detained dozens in the area. The current Iraqi government's prisons are known to torture their detainees in trying to extract confessions for crimes not committed. One eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous revealed that this center is no exception in various brutalities, also mentioning specifically the holding of guns against the victims' wives or mothers.

And another report was released about women's prisons in Baghdad and Iraq. Thirty-one have been sentenced to death. They are accused of “terrorism,” the infamous “Article IV Terrorism,” without evidence or valid charges. They are not treated if ill. They are not allowed to bathe or change their clothes. Their young children are held with them and treated as prisoners. They have been exposed by the government forces to torture and electric shock, and forced to confess to crimes they did not commit under this context. They have been abused and raped by these government forces.
